Macey Leigh has been home one month today. Yippee!!
Yesterday we saw a surgeon who specializes in hand surgery at Texas Children's Hospital. As you may remember, Macey's left hand did not fully develop. Both our IA doctor and the hand doctor believe it was caused by amniotic banding. She has a small thumb and a functioning pinky, but no other fingers.
She does amazingly well with her hand as it is now. But I wanted to meet with the surgeon just to see if there was anything they could do to improve her functionality.
After taking x-rays, we have decided to leave her hand as it is. She has a small bone in her thumb but it is floating as there is no joint. So her thumb does not function. The opposing finger (pinky) is actually two fingers fused together, neither of them completely formed. The pinky is almost a full finger, but there is no finger nail. The ring finger is much shorter than it should be. He did say we could separate those but he believed they would be two very weak fingers rather than the one strong one that she has now and uses fairly well.
I went into the appointment expecting him to pretty much tell me that leaving her hand alone would be best so I was actually relieved. I hated to put her through surgery unless it was going to do amazing things for her. Now we can just get on with our lives! She is perfect to us just the way she is!
